Series Mag (Sept/Oct. 02)
This is a translation from a French magazine (Thanks to Nancy Erin for sending this in!):
When she isn't wearing Colonel MacKenzie's uniform, Catherine Bell always finds something to keep her busy. At 34, this very busy mother {Site Manager's Note: This was printed before it was known that Catherine was pregnant...so don't know why the reference to "mother" is in here?!} can do anything. Within one day she can go from a very sexy photo session to a ride in an F16, follow with a TV programme and end with a ride on a bike. Meeting with a fiery tempered actress.
In what ways are you similar to Colonel Sarah Mackenzie, your character in JAG?
We have lots in common! In fact, to create the character of Mac, the screenwriters first asked me what kind of sports I was good at, and what my hidden talents were. So I told them that I was pretty good at some martial arts like kick-boxing, that I love water-skiing, bikes and race cars. Anyway I explained that I was attracted to all dangerous sports. I also told them that I spoke Farsi fluently (Catherine is of Iranian descent), which explains why Colonel MacKenzie speaks that language. In summary, I brought some of my own personality into the character then the screenwriters added some characteristics to her.
For example?
The fact that she has a military career! I have to admit that this idea never crossed my mind! Personally I'm not a fan of uniforms. I am lucky though, since Mac is in the US Marine Corps, for her uniform looks pretty sexy. If I had been obliged to wear Ranger or Gear stuff I would have found it less funny. But, even if Mac's uniform isn't that bad, I still prefer her being in civilian clothes. I feel much more relaxed that way.
What do you think of the Army?
Before playing in JAG, I didn't know anything about the army. I wasn't able to tell the difference between the grades, and I wasn't aware of the hard discipline of a soldier. Today I have a better understanding of the way the military works, and I truly respect the men and women who devote their lives to the defense of their country.
When you put on Mac's Uniform, does it have any influence at all to your behavior?
Yes totally! When I arrive on the set in the morning, I'm wearing jeans, a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a walk around the set, I say hello to the technicians, have some jokes with them, and I'm very relaxed. But as soon as I get into the uniform my spirit changes. I get more serious, I suddenly feel like I have huge responsibilities and that I'm entitled to give orders! Anyway I play the game and this uniform changes me completely. Is it bad, doctor? (giggles) - ha, I think one can easily picture this.
You said that you like strong sensations - What was your latest experience in that field?
Recently I flew for 45 minutes in an F16. It was really impressive! We reached a speed of 1000km/h within a few seconds and we got over the sound barrier. I was stuck to my seat, I could hardly breathe and I almost fainted. I will never forget that experience
In 1992, you started your actress career standing in for Isabella Rosselini's legs in a film called “Death Becomes Her.” How did you get that job?
At that time I worked as a model. I did some fashion shows and photo shoots for commercials. One day my agent asked me whether I would like to play in a movie. Since I was puzzled, I asked more details about the film. With a little embarrassment, he explained to me that it would be an extra part, not a proper role. Then he confessed that they wanted to film a close up of Isabella Rosselini's legs but she didn't want to show hers. I thought this was funny so I accepted.
JAG has reached its highest audience in the United States right now - how long do you think it will go on?
It's true that the show has lots of success. It is sad to say but since the September 11th attacks, people have started watching Military shows again. We are now starting the 8th season and there will be at least another one if not two. At least I hope so.
You recently did a sexy photo shooting for FHM Magazine. What was your motivation?
I just thought that was amusing. I asked to see the pictures before they were published, and when I saw them I thought they were very sexy without being vulgar so I authorized them to be published. Now, more people recognize me in the street.
{THE END}
